How to remove the background from a product photo
Clean product photos sell better. Here is how to cut the background out of a product picture in about a minute, for free, and save it as a transparent PNG or a white-background JPG, without uploading the photo anywhere.
Why a clean background matters
Marketplaces like Etsy, eBay, Amazon and Shopify stores look more trustworthy when every item sits on the same plain background. Shoppers compare products faster, and your listing looks like it belongs in the grid. A transparent cutout also lets you drop the product onto a branded color, a flyer or a catalog page later.
Step by step
- Start with a good photo.Shoot in daylight near a window, with the product filling most of the frame. A plain surface, even a sheet of paper, gives the cutout the easiest job. Avoid strong shadows falling across the product.
- Open imgLop and choose your photo. On the home page, click Choose a photo and pick your file. PNG, JPG, WEBP and iPhone HEIC all work, up to 15 MB each. No account is needed. Want to see it first? Click Try a sample.
- Wait a few seconds. The AI runs inside your browser, so the first run downloads the model once and later runs are faster. Your photo is not uploaded anywhere.
- Check the result.Use the Slider view to drag between the original and the cutout, or Side by side to compare them. Zoom in on corners, handles and thin parts like straps or chains.
- Pick your backdrop.Choose a swatch (white is the standard for marketplaces). The backdrop applies to the preview and to the JPG export. The PNG always stays transparent.
- Crop if you need to.Marketplaces usually want a square. Choose the 1:1 ratio so the product is centered with even space around it. Other options are Free, 4:3, 16:9 and 3:4.
- Download.Click Download PNG for a transparent file, or Download JPG with backdrop for a ready-to-upload picture on your chosen color.
PNG or JPG: which one to upload?
| You want | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A listing on Amazon, eBay, Etsy or Shopify | JPG with a white backdrop | Small file, loads fast, matches marketplace rules for a plain background. |
| To place the product on a flyer, banner or slide | Transparent PNG | Sits on any color or photo with no white box around it. |
| A social post with a colored background | JPG with a colored backdrop, or PNG in your design app | The JPG is ready to post as it is. |
Tips for cleaner edges
- Contrast helps. A white mug on a white table is hard for any tool. Put light products on a darker surface and dark products on a lighter one, then switch the backdrop afterward.
- Keep the product sharp. A blurry photo makes a blurry edge. Tap to focus on the product before you shoot.
- Be careful with glass, hair and fine mesh. Transparent and wispy parts are the hardest for every background remover. Check these areas at full zoom and, if a few specks remain, a plain backdrop that is close to the original surface hides them.
- Shoot a little wider than you need. You can crop tighter afterward, but you cannot add pixels that were never there.
- Do many at once. Batches take up to 40 photos at once. Each finished cutout downloads as a transparent PNG from its card, or you can send them all to the PDF tool. On the free plan each photo uses one of your 5 daily credits.
Privacy: imgLop processes images in your browser. Your product photos, including unreleased products, are not sent to a server. That matters if you are photographing a new line before launch.
What size should a product photo be?
Marketplaces want enough pixels for shoppers to zoom. Etsy recommends at least 2000 px on both sides; Amazon needs at least 1000 px on the longest side for zoom, and 1600 px or more is better. Start with a photo at or above that size. imgLop keeps your resolution up to a 4096 px longest edge, which covers every common requirement. Check the current rules on your marketplace's seller help page, since they change.
Questions people ask
Is it really free?
Yes. You get 5 free AI background removals per day with no account. The count resets at midnight your local time.
Is my product photo uploaded?
No. The cutout runs in your browser on your own device, so the picture never reaches a server.
Can I save the cutout with a white background?
Yes. Pick the white swatch, then choose Download JPG with backdrop. The PNG download always stays transparent.
Will it work on an iPhone photo?
Yes. iPhone HEIC files are supported along with PNG, JPG and WEBP, up to 15 MB each.
The edges look rough on my photo. What can I do?
Try a photo with more contrast between the product and the surface, shoot in brighter light, and zoom in to check before you export. Very fine parts such as hair, fur and glass are the hardest cases for any automatic tool.
