How to convert HEIC photos to JPG
Your iPhone saves photos as HEIC, and many sites and programs cannot open them. This guide shows how to change them to JPG in a few clicks, one photo or forty at once, without uploading anything.
What HEIC is, and why you might want JPG
Newer iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC. It keeps files small, but plenty of websites, older Windows PCs, printers and email systems cannot open it. JPG opens almost everywhere, so converting is the quickest way to share a photo that someone else cannot open.
Step by step
- Open the tool.Go to imgLop's Convert format tab in Creative Studio. No account is needed.
- Add your HEIC photos.Click Choose photos or drag them in. You can add up to 40 photos, up to 40 MB each. On an iPhone, tap Choose photos and select them from your library.
- Choose the format.Under Format, pick JPG. PNG is there too if you need it, and so is WEBP if your browser supports it. Otherwise, use JPG for photos or PNG for graphics and logos.
- Set the quality. The slider starts at 92, which keeps photos looking close to the original. Lower it if you also want smaller files.
- Click Convert. The picture size stays the same, except that photos over 16 megapixels are reduced so every browser can handle them.
- Download. One photo downloads directly. Several download together as a ZIP with Download all (ZIP). Converted files keep their original names, with the new file ending (for example, IMG_1234.heic becomes IMG_1234.jpg).
JPG, PNG or WEBP?
| Format | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photos you want to share, email or upload anywhere | Smaller files, works almost everywhere, no transparency. |
| PNG | Graphics, screenshots, and images with transparency | Lossless but large for photos. |
| WEBP | Websites that accept it | Small files, but some older programs cannot open it. |
Tips
- Transparent areas. PNG and WEBP keep see-through parts. JPG cannot be transparent, so when JPG is the chosen format, a Fill transparent areas with option appears (White, Light gray or Black) for the tool to fill them.
- Need smaller files too? Use the Resize & compress tab, which also accepts HEIC and lets you set a size.
- Stop taking HEIC photos. On an iPhone, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG, and photos you already took stay as HEIC. The new photos use more space as a result.
- Converting to PDF instead? You do not need to convert first. The Images to PDF tool accepts HEIC directly.
Privacy: Your photos are converted inside your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, and the tool is free with no daily limit.
